U.S.- Malaysia FTA Negotiations



March 25, 2006 - Lotus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur - A Forum entitled "The US - Malaysia Free Trade Agreement (FTA):Implications For Malaysian Society" was organized by Third World Network, Consumers' Association of Penang and Sahabat Alam Malaysia.

This forum had laid down several reasons why they are opposing to the ongoing US-Malaysia Free Trade agreement (FTA). "On 8 March this year, Malaysia and the United States announced their intention to start negotiating a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA). There will be high pressure negotiations in the next few months, as the aim is to complete the deal by the end of the year, to take advantage of the US President's "fast track authority" that ends in mid-2007".

The forum were attended by Brother Jufitri Joha; GPTD Chairman, Brother Mohd Akhmal Mohd Nor; GPTD Assistant Coordinator 2 and Brother Noryzal Zainal Abidin; Former GPTD Activist in Tasmania.

In conjuction with the forum, during GPTD week on April, GPTD is planning to organize a talk on the FTA topic to give a chance to GPTD activist to comprehend the issue which is crucial. According to Brother Azril Mohd Amin, ABIM International Vice President, as a global activist, GPTD activist must know and in fact well versed in certain international important issues such as FTA.
