His Excellency Peter J.E. Anegbeh
High Commissioner for Nigeria in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur.
Your Excellency,
Sub: Violent suppression of Al Quds Day Demonstration, the killing of five people, and the threat to the life of Mu’allim Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky by Nigerian police.
We, the undersigned civil society organsations, write to register our strongest protest against the forceful suppression by the Nigerian police of the demonstration on Al Quds Day in Zaria, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria in support of the struggle of the Palestinian people for liberation of their homeland from Zionist colonialism and occupation.
We understand that police violence has led to the klling of five innocent lives and that the life of the leader of the Islamic Movement Mu'allim Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky is under threat from the state's security forces. We have received reports of armed riot police moving towards Mu’allim Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky’s house in Zaria, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria. Members of the Islamic Movement are surrounding the home of Nigeria’s Islamic Movement leader, in a bid to block any attack by police.
Members o f the movement are unarmed, whereas the mobile police units are heavily armed and deployed in streets and areas near Al-Zakzaky’s residence. There are serious and credible fears that an attack is imminent on Al-Zakzaky’s home, which is part of a compound which houses many people. If the feared attack takes place, it will surely lead to a lot of bloddshed and loss of many innocent lives. Such an outcome must be prevented.
The serious violation of the human rights of those who took part in the demonstration and the threatened attack on Mu'allim Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky by the state's security apparatus must be condemned by Nigerians of all faiths and all peace-loving people in the world.
We are shocked that Nigeria, a victim of European colonialism and with a tradition of heroic resistance to it, has chosen to suppress its people's demonstration of support for the struggle of the Palestinians whose homeland has been colonised by settlers from Europe and the United States for over sixty years and who on a daily basis suffer discrimination, violence, and indignities from the Zionist occupation forces.
The brutal action by your security forces against people exercising their democratic and constitutional rights will not only create division and disunity in Nigeria leading to more violence but also tarnish its image in the Third world and in the movements for democracy, peace and justice in the West.
We urge your government to take immediate action to put an end to the repressive police action against the supporters of the Islamic Movement and to ensure the safety and liberty of Mu'allim Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky.
Yours truly,
Haji S.M. Mohamed Idris, Chairman, Citizens International
Azmi Hamid, Nusantara Initiative for Justice and Peace (NADI)
