World Chechnya Day

February 23, 2010, is commemorated as the World Chechnya Day. Chechnya is one of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) that opted for independence after the demise of the USSR in 1990. However, their sovereignty was cut down by Russia when it invaded Chechnya in 1994. Although Chechnya ably defended the country by defeating Russia in 1995, nevertheless the latter returned to unleash a more ruthless war in 1999, bringing death and destruction in genocidal proportion without equal to any previous wars in history.
